Polar Bear Ballet

My dad doesn't really pay attention to the movies we watch at home. Usually he continues reading the news on his laptop or doing his thing* around the house. At times it gets on my nerves because something really emotional is happening on screen and then my dad's voice comes out of nowhere, "Who left this water bottle on the table?"

It's like, Daaaaad, can't you see that Jack is about to tell Will that he's his father? So I've developed a preference for watching movies alone, because absolutely no one will disturb me to ask where the broom is or tell me about another epidemic.

Yesterday he said, "Norwegian scientists discovered a dead polar bear. It was nothing but skin and bones." I sat up because polar bears are the saddest animals on this planet and I have a huge soft spot for them, especially the metal ones at the San Diego Zoo that scorch my inner thighs when I climb on them for a photo. He turned the laptop around and he hadn't exaggerated a bit. The photos were devastating.

So...happier polar bear photos. Happier polar bear photos.......

Olga Gladysheva's aptly named Water Ballet photos are polar bears at their most graceful. If I didn't know that they would rip me to shreds, I'd get into the water with them. (Doesn't stop me from wanting it.)

*I wish that doing his thing meant dancing, but we have not been graced with that blessing.

Faces of Water | Detailed Portraits of Water in Motion

Today in borderline terrifying, Moses Hacmon photographed the minute details of moving water in his project, Faces of Water. What sets these photos apart from other studies of water's make-up is that Hacmon captured the water in motion, so you can see evidence of its movement and energy. And if you think about it, isn't water most powerful when it's drilling holes and forming canyons?
Now that you've seen the true face of water, never drink it again.

Imaginary Outfits | Some Clothes Can't Afford Bodies

My internship came to an end yesterday, and in less than a week I'll be back in France facing a new school year.

I've started collecting my thoughts in terms of goals, resolutions, and all those things people write self-help books and create talk shows about. While working on the anime-inspired fashion post for the magazine, I was reunited with the outfit collage and remembered how fun they are to put together. So I oiled my rusty Polyvore account and voilĂ :
I figured this wouldn't be a bad addition to the blog.

I'm picturing this as a running errands in der Stadt kind of get-up. Very bright, so no one will mistake you for a wall. It's actually quite practical if you think about it.

Trailer | The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

I go into work at the magazine twice a week - and yes, I'm aware that's a pretty laid-back schedule, but the day still manages to drag on. With my top-notch economics education, I have accurately deduced that my productivity is inversely correlated to how much feeling I have in my butt.

So there I was, having just offered half an hour to the Tumblr gods (I would tell you what I'm wishing for, but I don't want to jinx it), with about two hours of professionalism to go.

At a certain point, the numbness goes away and the pain sets in and you find yourself dreaming of running a mile or something. Of running. That's when you know you're past help. (In all honesty, I really do love my job here. I mean, this morning I wrote about a burka-wearing superhero fighting for universal education. It's a pretty sweet gig. It's the sitting for hours on end that gets me.)

Then this showed up on my dash, and I'm telling you - in the same way your grandmother tells you about the miracle pill her friend gave her that will cure all your illnesses and materialize a boyfriend for you - this video rejuvenated me. I had to do a lot of smirk-repressing, and the more smirk-repressing the better something is.

Trust me. I'm an economist. I read The Economist.

It's the trailer for Ben Stiller's new movie, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, based on the 1939 short story by James Thurber. It's like technology pulled through and Mad Men had a baby with Eat Pray Love and magical realism (I know, amazing! First three-parent reproduction, now the ability to mate with entire genres - what wonders will be next).
I'm still withholding judgment on the film, as I obviously haven't seen it, but the trailer puts a smile back on my face and reawakens some of the nerves in my butt. So there's that.

Sometimes trailers are quite good on their own. There should be trailer awards. Is anyone on this.
